My words cannot remove the pain
So why do I still write? As all my strength does sorrow drain To fight against death’s bite My eyes no longer see his face So why must I still see? The dreams we were prepared to chase Dance in front of me? My ears still echo with his voice Yet I no longer hear His leaving me was not his choice Yet was my greatest fear My body aches for his embrace For comfort in his arms To make my heart with love’s thoughts race Endeared so by his charms His sweet caress, so greatly missed His tender, loving care To hold him once more, I have wished To stroke his silken hair Will comfort ever still my heart? Will my tears ever cease? Can words become a healing art? My sorrow’s sweet release? Like my tears, the words won’t dry The river overflows I ask and answer questions why ‘til everybody knows. “Come join the cause, help find a cure” These are my battle cries Called in a loud voice, true and pure “Before another dies” No we can’t mend the broken heart Or take away the past But with your help we’ll make a start To destroy SADS at last! This poem was written for Sarah, who lost her husband to SADS (Sudden Arrhythmic Death Syndrome) in June 2007, two weeks after his 24th birthday. My poem is dedicated not only to Sarah and her children who bravely go on despite their tragic loss, but to all who have suffered similar losses, to those dedicated to finding a cure for this terrible phenomenon, and to all who support this cause through donation or by helping to raise public awareness. Sarah is compiling a booklet of donated poetry to raise funds to support a charity that has been of great aid and comfort to her family: SADS UK. The booklet will be offered as a gift to those who make a donation to the charity. It will also help to increase public awareness and motivate others to support the battle against SADS.
