Metronome
A poem written in appreciation for the beating heart.

Metronome

My heart,
you are my metronome.
You measure seconds,
beats in the hours of my days
like internal drums
tapping away the time
I have left in this world.

But Metronomes don't measure
moments with family,
the sound of my sons
giggling out loud,
a wink at the dinner table
over a funny joke,
the love we have for each other.

And Metronomes can't measure
the impact of a difficult year
of loss and gratitude,
of dreams of parenthood,
of learning how to march
to the sound of our own beats
together as one.

My heart, my Metronome,
through all your faults and limitations,
without you, I would not hear
the tempo of tiny footsteps
on the hardwood floors
or share my love of life
with the ones I love.

Metronome, may your beat live on.
