Saving Grace
Everyone is saving grace with ideals they defend, living lies in a human race, filling voids from end to end. Nothing's certain in the ending, no one's losing any sleep, all the rules you have been bending are the ones you ought to keep. Passion's lovers neath' the sheets, procreate the day away; running naked in the streets, unashamed in the light of day. When you wake up in the morning, your dreams are crashing down. All your friends are really boring, the ones that aren't, are leaving town. As all those dreams are very near and nightmares fall away, when all that's seen is crystal clear and nothing more is in the way. Then you slip into your slippers when you get out of the bed, an original "Day Tripper" popping pills made for the head. Now working years and years away and you're feeling like a jerk, you'll fantasize away the day, "beam me up" like Captain Kirk. When your life is going nowhere and your future's dimly cast, still you're looking for it somewhere but it's hiding in the past. Then you finally find your calling and it isn't what you thought but you know the axe is falling, what it's chopping can't be bought. Then one day when the chest pains start, you'll ask God to let you live; but it's too late and you must part for you have no more to give. So then you'll take you final breath and you know you've done your best, the lights are fading, there is Death and it's time for you to rest. Then you will fly the friendly skies to a place you've never seen, where no one ever cries or dies and the valleys are so green. Now when you finally figure out, the reason you're in this place, then my friend, you'll have no doubt; why you spent a lifetime saving grace.
