WINTERS OF LIFE: a sonnet—Award winner
When winter comes and snow is all around, It casts a spell in ways quite different. Often children playing in snow are found; For them winter is an event transient. The young find warmth in each other’s embrace, As they savor choicest whisky and wine. For them winter has rather benign face; They truly make merry and dance and dine. The old are the ones for whom winter brings A cold and bitter message that is sure. A stark truth in their mind bitterly rings: “In life’s winter evening you can’t endure. You have seen many a spring and summer. But winter, you are just meant to suffer”. • Awarded honorable mention prize in The Bard's Hall Contest "The Bard's Hall Contest" • Initially written as entry no. 401074 in the book POEMS ABOUT AGEING, "POEMS ABOUT AGEING" M C Gupta 21 January 2006
