As darkness settles all around,
It crushes me and breaks my soul;
Such madness rife and grief abound,
I'm pulled into the blackest hole.

I cannot see how to escape
And so I fall eternally.
Accepting of my hopeless fate,
My sadness burns internally;

Remains a secret deep inside,
A grinning mask conceals my frown;
They must not see how much I've cried,
For I could never live it down.

I struggle on through hellish night,
My weary eyes resisting sleep.
But then I spy a feeble light
And in relief I sigh and weep.

It glimmers like a distant star;
A candlewick ablaze with hope.
I watch it winking from afar
As I secure a swinging rope.

I make a loop and tie a knot;
The light of death still gleams in peace.
I am the one that joy forgot,
But now at last I'll find release.
