True Cruelties(poetry contest)
Some of life's cruelties often go unseen.

Everyday we hear, on the radio, on the news,
Some injustice on humanity, assaulting our ears.
If every cruel act was told, every misery portrayed,
We would have no time for the goodness in life.
It might leave us all insane.

True cruelties go often unnoticed,
They happen every day,
So wrapped up in our daily lives,
Blind to what is around us.
The homeless man left on the street,
No home to call his own,
Disowned by his family,
Invisible to those around him.
No one to lend a helping hand,
An encouraging smile or word,
He is swept up like trash,
Washed into the sewers.

An elderly woman loses her life,
Her home and independence torn away,
For a life in a place where others dwell
To spend the last of her days.
Memories fail as the disease progresses,
She forgets her family, her faith,
A once filled chalkboard
Brutally erased.

The cruelties go on and on,
Most never given a single thought.
Who cries out for justice?
Who will lend a hand,
For those who have much less than us,
For those who can't take a stand?
