Necessary Elixer
coffee is the elixer of life to a new mother

The first
warm water
pulses through veins
to pick up caffeine
in my heart of coffee,
Pumping a dark, rich liquid
into my empty glass stomach,
full of the warm elixir of life -
Aromatic caffeine awaits sleeper.

Lethargic new mom is roused by crying.
Hungry newborn demanding bottle.
Tired mom shuffling to kitchen -
-Infant in arms impatient-
speaks soothingly to son
as she gets a cup
and slowly pours
warm coffee
from my
soul.
