The world moves on with laughter

The fallen stay
while the world moves on with laughter.

These flaccid stalks stood tall last summer.
Autumn’s frost and snow of winter
softened pith and bent them; withered now,
the cattails bow to rushing streams
of snowmelt and the flood of Springlike days.

The fallen stay
while the world moves on with laughter.

Bleached by wind, benign neglect, her
silk flowers fade as sun returns
and crocus blooms along stone paths
define the thaw till old men plant
geraniums each May in memory.

The fallen stay
while the world moves on with laughter.

Family and friends she helped once bid her
well and then good riddance
when the magic spell was broken.
She had nothing then to offer them
save syllables and sounds they can't recall.

The fallen stay
while the world moves on with laughter.

Once he blessed his wife with sun and moon;
his sons twirled round with laughter.
Yet while their world moves on and she rots here,
where crocus blooms and cattails bend,
her words will echo ever after.
