Image Item Info

Images are a great way to spark up your portfolio, signatures and items on Writing.Com! If you are an Upgraded or Premium Member, you may upload and store images in your portfolio. If you are not Upgraded and are interested, please refer to our Online Store for more information.

Uploading an Image

First, you want to create the image on your computer using any graphic software such as PaintShop Pro or Adobe Photoshop. After you've created and saved your image to your computer, you are now ready to upload it into your Writing.Com portfolio.

Image Items are created just like any other item type on Writing.Com. You can either go to the "Writing" page and choose Image. Or you can click on "My Portfolio" and scroll to the bottom of the screen. You will see the link to create an Image.

Just like any other item on Writing.Com, you'll need to name it, place it in a folder, set restrictions, and so on. You will also need to choose the type of the image you are uploading (clip art, illustration, photograph, etc).

You will be asked to "browse" your computer for the image to be uploaded. Find and choose the image from your computer. You also have the option to refer that image to another item, such as a forum, poem or poll. Just input the item's ID. That means, when anyone mouses over the image, it will be linked to the item that you entered.

When you are finished filling out the entire form, click Save Item.


Using Images Within Other Items

If you would like to include an image in something like a message post, signature or poem, you need to know the Image ID number and a little bit of WritingML.

When you decide where the image should show up, place this in your item:

Replace the #-symbol with the
ID number of the image you would like to use.

Sharing Images With Other Members

We're doing our part to save portfolio space by now allowing members to share images with each other. You will no longer have to download images to your computer and then re-upload them into your own portfolio to share them.

The owner simply sets the new Image Sharing option on any image in your portfolio. Other Upgraded and Premium Members can then use the image within their items, posts, entries, etc with a normal WritingML {image:######} tag. For an example of shared images, view "Writing.Com Images For Upgraded Members" .


Image File Types

The following image file types may be uploaded into your portfolio:

JPEG: These are usually best for photographs and high-color images.

GIF: These contain no more than 256 colors and do not work well for photographs or high-color images. GIFs can use transparency and animation. Please note that use of animated GIFs is reserved for members with Premium Membership and above.

PNG: PNG is a format similar to GIF, but PNGs compress better than GIFs. This means they create smaller files that are quicker to upload and download.


Image Guidelines and Policies

1. Images may be no larger in size than 400 x 400 pixels. Animated images may be no larger than 200 x 200 pixels.

2. Image file size may be no larger than 100k.

3. Please rate the content of your image properly. For more information on content ratings, please read: Writing.Com Content Rating System (CRS) .

4. The image must be your copyright; any image that is posted on Writing.Com applies to the same rules as our written items. If you do not have permission from the original owner of that image, you do NOT have permission to post this item. Even if an offsite website tells you that you may post an image for free, you must still provide a reference to the site from which you took the image. If an image has not been drawn or designed by only you, you must provide information regarding the original owner of that image. Just as you would include the name of the Author of a quote, you must include the name of the Artist of the image. For more information on copyrights, please read: Writing.Com Copyright Policy .

5. Do NOT use the Writing.Com logo in any of your items, unless we have authorized it. The Writing.Com logo (and any other images located in a Staff member's folder) is a trademark of 21 x 20 Media, Inc. and may only be used by Writing.Com Staff unless you have express written permission.

6. Please use discretion when using your images in signatures, which appear in emails and message posts. Emails are a public service on Writing.Com and as such, you should pay particular attention to the image that is contained in your signature. Sending inappropriate images to unsuspecting viewers is considered harassment.

7. You may post mildly erotic images on here, but there are a few things that you need to make sure of:
         - the image will need to be rated properly
         - when rating an erotic image, lean to the higher rating or ask a Moderator for help if you aren't sure where to place it. Erotic images fall no lower than 18+ and most will be at least GC. When posting an image that may be considered erotic, please pay careful attention to the rating you choose.
         - extreme pornography is not acceptable here. Any image requiring a rating higher than XGC is not acceptable and you will be asked to remove it from your portfolio. Extremely hardcore pornographic images such as blatant sexual acts, exposed genitalia, etc. are not permitted. Failure to follow this rule may result in account termination.

We recommend the following site for quality royalty-free images:

Use an image to show off your style in a signature! Include your handle or username in the image and design it in a way that depicts you as a writer or person. If you make an image to use in your signature, please be sure to keep the file size as small as you can. When reading posts in a forum, members and visitors have to wait for your images to load and some might skip over your words completely because they don't want to wait that long!

Add diagrams, photographs or charts to articles and essays that you write.

Include an illustration or painting in your item which depicts a character or part of the story.

Create a bio of yourself (static item) and upload pictures of your pets, hobbies or favorite books, if you like.

Upload a themed title in your favorite font for a specific item that you've written.
