lost pennies
a contemporary fable where fairy tales don't end happily

where stars rise
on a blue-blood horizon
dreams sputter into life
before moon-fall

lost pennies
discard my secret wishes
bring fleeting contentment
of a warm hearth

as snow falls
quiet voices question faith
life-giving memories
fade too quickly

before sleep
I recite old-fashioned verse
poetic happenings
life hesitates

night birds call
the air chills their wailing song
premonition sinks deep
in cancer's kiss

morning grief
casts dim shadows in silence
sad forgetfulness walks
among death's tales
