This War We Are Fighting
As will he when his day comes to leave I only ask that he comes back to me...

It was a warm, sunny day
In the month of June
But there was no warmth for her
As she walked into the room
I had been sitting on my bed
Reading one of my many books
When she fell to the floor
And on her face a sorrowful look
I went to her side
Holding her close as she cried
It was a warm, sunny day
The day her husband died.

This war we are fighting
I know not if it is right or wrong
Never really sure of why we went
And have stayed there so long
So much death and so much pain
Is it really worth it all
Will we rise up and win
Or will we eventually fall
So many lies from those in charge
How can anyone know what is real
But it's too late now to change
I only hope I never know how she feels

She cries out muffled words
Her love's name on her tongue
A child within her
Never will he know his father so young
Never will he know his father's warm laugh
Or his tight but gentle embrace
She will raise him all on her own
Pain behind the smile on her face
Sorrowful that he would never see his boy
Wishing he had never went away
All this she said between tears
Cradled in my arms this summer's day

This war we are fighting
I know not if it is right or wrong
Never really sure of why we went
And have stayed there so long
So much death and so much pain
Is it really worth it all
Will we rise up and win
Or will we eventually fall
So many lies from those in charge
How can anyone know what is real
But it's too late now to change
I only hope I never know how she feels

Now I sit and watch in silence
As the man I love goes to join the war
He is a soldier and I am proud of him
But I only think of my friend more and more
Will he come back to me
Or will I be the one mourning one day
To help so many in this world
A great price we must pay
And selfishly I wish we never went
But I know that cannot be
America will always be there
To always try to set them free

As will he when his day comes to leave
I only ask that he comes back to me...
