Sitting in my computer room one morning, I was watching out my open window at the scene before me. Every morning between six and eight o'clock, the yard is flooded with small feathered bodies coming in for breakfast. This never fails to fascinate and captivate me.
Living in the country has always been my dream. I love nature and all of its creatures, big and small. Last year, we added feeders of different types, along with hummingbird feeders. It quickly became my passion in the mornings and off and on through the day to gaze out my window to watch the show outside.
Cardinals, chickadees, blue jays, nuthatches, downy woodpeckers, hairy woodpeckers, juncos, and finches grace me with their presence as well as their songs. Squirrels, both red and gray, with their animated bushy tails also arrive to eat from their feeders. The red squirrels, being tiny in stature, will climb all the way in the feeder to eat, chasing the gray squirrels away when any approach.
The air is filled with the sound of nature. Birds call to each other, a human "time to eat" sound, to announce the morning meal. Looking not much different from a busy airport, the sky is filled with feathered bodies on graceful wings. Whoever said that the country is too quiet has never been in my backyard.
Not just birds and squirrels do we see, from time to time, we are graced with the presence of deer, foxes, and the stout feathered bodies of turkeys. This adds a special touch to the day to see the graceful brown deer moving silently among the brush and grass to feed.
When, at last, evening arrives, bidding goodbye to the sun, frog songs fill the air as the fireflies perform their evening dance. Gently breezes bring the earthy smells of the day. A most relaxing tribute to the day.
