Whispers in the Dark

Waking to the whispers sounded in the dead of night,
Heartbeat skipping as your hand seeks out ill-working light.
Irises wide with fear attempting to pierce the void,
Susurrations drive into your heart a spear, you're paranoid.
Persperation glistens on your brow reflecting an inner pain.
Every moment of silence heightens your tense and nervous strain.
Rain, a sudden downpour and loud, makes you jump with a start;
Suppressing the unknown alarm until the words reach your heart.
I need you. Come to me. I can't see you anymore. Come to me. I need you.
Newly awakened terror from the haunted depths within your mind.
Tingling shivers begin to crawl as distant memories now unwind.
Hearing whispers from the past, your childhood comes back to haunt.
Earlier nights were spent in fear and siblings in the morning taunt.
Derided for each blood-curdling and relentless scream of death
As you awoke to thunderstorms which left you without breath.
Rumbling in the distance tonight you now hear it clearly again -
Keening from another room - a sleepover of children in the den.

Dead hands rise into inner silence
As unknown to you distant whispers taunt each breath.
You sleep.
