A Wish For You, My Son

A WISH FOR YOU, MY SON

My son, I watch you as you grow.
You impress me with the things you know.
How proud I am when you stand tall
and face your fears despite it all.

You amaze me as you tell your tales
of pirates, knights and dragon's scales,
but my heart weeps as you tell other stories
of homeless people full of heartache and worries.

It warms my spirit when you cry
I know such freedom soon may die.
A man you'll be and soon you'll learn
to turn it inward 'til it burns.

Your soul, I fear, so open and raw.
Your heart takes a dive when you see someone fall.
You hurt deep inside when you're not included
and root for the underdog when they are excluded.

My love for you grows as you sing from your heart
to the words of songwriters' lessons to impart.
You feel the music and sing it out loud
without fear or restraint, for you know I am proud.

Throughout your life, I have a wish for you,
that you find a balance between productive and true.
Live honestly, my son, no emotion is forbidden,
but watch your heart and to whom it is given.

Rest your melancholy soul for a brief time,
then use sadness to create your music and rhymes.
For you have the power of love, so sensitive and pure.
Never be ashamed, my son, to share it with the world.

Dedicated to you, my older son,
my deep and caring one,
for whom I'll always be devoted.
With love, your mother, SWPoet.
