Discussion Topic:
Of the World-Building topics we've discussed, which do you think is most important in Fantasy? In Science Fiction? In Science Fantasy? Or do you think that the same tool or tools of World-Building are of equal importance in any of these categories? Fantasy: Figuring out who can and can't do magic, the rules magic can be done by, and the cost if any of doing magic. Science Fiction: I think the most important thing in world-building in science-fiction is making sure the description of each technological component fits with the rest so that the gadgets work together as a system. Science Fantasy: I think the most important concept here is finding a way to explain how both magic and high-tech science can co-exist without one running over the other one. It can't just be left to the reader to accept it on face value. The reader deserves an explanation of how this can be possible since science and magic oppose each other by definition.
