A Real Mother at Last

The baby boy lay alone in his bed,
Pondering if his mother was dead.
Hunger wracked his tiny frame,
For his woes he knew no one to blame..
A burning rash tormented him, as well.
He lived inside an anguished hell.

He sometimes saw a face from above,
That brought to him no semblance of love.
Eyes hollow, and mouth twisted in pain,
Her only offering, anger and disdain.
Her hands were not gentle, no love could they show.
At times they shook him with the force of a foe.

Three years he lived where love was missed,
Crying for a mother who did not exist.
Then rescuers came and took him away,
To a loving family who hoped he could stay.
Seven years went by, yet try as they might,
His heart was still cold, still filled with such fright.

They'd taken him to counselors, but to no avail.
His new mom cried, "How did we fail?"
Just as she felt she could no longer cope,
God sent her a sign-a message of hope.
A therapist diagnosed his behavior and pain,
Attachment Disorder, this horror she named.

He must learn to express his fears and his joys,
Learn to laugh and play like the other boys.
Now things are better-her son has a mother!
She fought for that title-she fought like no other.
The journey of his healing has only begun,
Though his real mom knows the battle is won!
