                                            Ghazal 131


Persian:  Yaad baad aan keh sar e koo e to am manzil bood
              Deeda ra rooshni az khaak e darat hasil bood
Urdu:      Yaad hay jab keh tera koucha meri manzil tha
              Surma e khaak e dar e paak mujhay hasil tha

English:=== There was a time I lived in her street
                  And used to kiss the dirt of her feet
                                                -

Persian:  Raast chu soosan o gul az asar e sohbat e paak
              Bar zabaan bood mara aan cheh tura dar dil bood
Urdu:      Sousan o gul ki tarheh paak tha apna rishta
              Tha zabaan per meri, jo taeray daroon e dil tha

English:=== My way to her heart I could easily find
                  I had on my tongue what was in her mind
                                                  -

Persian:  Dil chun az peer e khirad naqd e maani meejust
              Ishq meeguft ba sharh aan keh bar o mushkil bood
Urdu:      Dhoondhta peer e khirad naqd e maani tha magar
              Karta hal ishq tha, her masela jo mushkil tha

English:=== And what was above and beyond my brain
                  My feelings of love could always explain
                                                  -

Persian:  Aah az ein jour o tazallum keh dar ein daamgeh ast
              Waay zaan aish o tanaam keh dar aan manzil bood
Urdu:      Aah wo joar o sitam jo shab e hijraan maen thay
              Wah wo aesh jo moujood sar e manzil tha

English:=== And what, in her absence, was hard to bear
                  Became very pleasant when she was there
                                                  -

Persian:  Dar dilam bood keh baydost nabaasham hargiz
              Cheh tawaan guft keh see e mun o dil baatil bood
Urdu:      Kehta phirta tha keh baydost rahoon ga na kabhee
              Kitna bayaql tha, nadaan yeh kaisa dil tha

English:=== And I used to think that she was all mine
                  But alas, she had another design
                                                  -                   

Persian:  Doosh bar yaad e hareefaan ba kharabaat shudam
              Khum e may deedam o khoun dar dil o pa dar gil bood
Urdu:      Yaad e maynoushaan say kal rat udaasi thi bohat
              Khum lahu say tha bhara, jaam maen khoun e dil tha

English:=== For old time's sake, I went to the bar
                  Instead of wine, there was blood in the jar
                                                -

Persian:  Bus bagashtam keh bapursam sabab e dard e firaaq
              Mufti e aql dar ein masela layaaqil bood
Urdu:      Poochha un say tha kabhee ger gham e hijraan ka sabab
              Mufti khamoush tha, hairaan bohat aaqil tha

English:=== About pangs of love when I asked my doc
                  What he said to me was all poppycock 
                                                  -

Persian:  Raasti khatam e feerooza e Bulishaaqi
              Khush darakhsheed walay doulat e mustaajil bood
Urdu:      Wo jo khatam maen tha feeroza e Bulishaaqi
              Tha darakhshaan toe magar johar e naqaabil tha

English:=== Oh, when I think of Ishaq, the king
                  I feel, he was the breeze of spring
                                                  -

Persian:  Deedi aan qahqaha e kabk e kharaaman HAFIZ
              Keh zay sarpunja e shaheen e qaza ghafil bood
Urdu:      Yaad hay qahqaha e kabk e kharaamaan HAFIZ
              Wo jo az punja e shaheen e qaza ghafil tha

English:=== Yes, HAFIZ, he was like a happy bird
                  Of the mighty hawk who had never heard
                                                ====
