UNDER LOCK AND KEY

I think that if I could have, I would have
kept my children under lock and key
but that was simply quite impossible
as they all struggled to grow up on me.

I would have kept them safe from harm,
no danger or tears would ever get near.
I would keep them little for so long and
they would never have anything to fear!

Life has to be lived by each of them
with freedom to experience and grow.
We cannot keep them free of bruises
but we'd like to try, as we all know.

It's when we do our very best to raise
them in the way that they should go
and they come home, all grown up,
that we can have a sense of afterglow.

I think that if I could have, I would have
kept my children under lock and key
but that was simply quite impossible
as they succeeded in growing up on me.
