Horace Walpole is credited with having a lot to do with the invention of the genre. Gothic architecture accompanies the gothic literature of the time. The key ingredients to Gothic literature seem to be creating enjoyable fear in the form of ghost stories or the paranormal, and using mutant creatures such as werewolves, witches, demons or ghosts. Anti-Catholicism in the form of using the Inquisition was a common theme too. A subgenre of Gothic literature by female authors also became popular.
