The America of my youth represented
the highest principles; we stood as a beacon to the rest of the world. Now our grip upon liberty’s torch daily continues to weaken. The America of my youth never initiated war, but attack us and we’d attack back. Bush and Cheney abandoned this rule with their unprovoked attack on Iraq. The America of my youth condemned our adversaries for not acting according to the Geneva Convention with captives. Today we use torture like water boarding. The America of my youth condemned police state tactics violating citizens’ rights. Today America has trampled many precious laws in a climate of fear and the abuses it invites. The America of my youth had among the three branches of federal government checks and balances. Today Bush and Cheney abuse “Executive Privilege”, and yet no one objects. The America of my youth has been stolen, with an “Imperial Presidency” as its replacement. Why have Congress and we the people allowed this travesty? How can we all remain so complacent?
