ASSIGNMENT:

For this last lesson use dialog and narrative to create a scene. The setting is on a beach at sunset. Two characters have decided that this will be the last time they meet. Use subtext. In 100-300 words, write the scene and submit.

“The bridge is complete,” said Ralph.

“With the arced suspension, it will support anything,” said Fred.

“Maybe we’ll get the chance to work on another project together,” said Ralph.

Fred looked down and shook his head. “Who knows? It’s a small world.”

“I’m one man who will happy to see the last of Iraq,” said Ralph.

“I don’t care if they blow the bridge up or not,” said Fred. “The job’s done. When I get back to the states I’m going to take my family to the ocean. Like this. Only without the bombs.”

“I’m taking my kids to Disney World,” said Ralph. “I’m going to enjoy the money.” He pointed his index finger upwards. “First class. That’s the only way from now on.”

“Would you ever do this again?” asked Fred.

“Hell, no!”

“Same here. No place like home.”

“Well this is it, buddy,” said Ralph. “Got to pack my gear and catch my flight.” Ralph extended his palm and wrapped it in Fred’s. He gave it a manly shake, patted Fred on the back and walked away.

He heard Fred yell, “Born in the USA.”
