Assignment:
Please write 100-150 words of dialogue, with interspersing of accents (probably no more than 2 characters with distinctive accents). See how many different ways you can think of to render accents without overdoing it or driving the reader away. “Hey babe,” said Frank. “What’s with the casserole? I thought it was barbecue night.” “Oh, I forgot,” answered Liz. “We’ll do it tomorrow.” She reached into the oven and pulled out a rectangular pan filled with victuals. “Well, what kind is it?” “Taters with corn, peas, and covered with cheese.” “My favorite. Cancel my complaint.” “Like I’d pay any attention to it anyway.” She saw Frank’s look change from cheerful to hurt. “Just kidding, honey. You’re my sweetie. My mean and nasty.” Frank laughed. “I never know when to take you seriously.” “That’s the idea,” said Liz. Frank walked to the refrigerator and opened the door. “What’s for dessert?” “Baked Alaska,” said Liz. “What?” Liz laughed. “I told you not to take me seriously. When we move to Park Avenue I’ll treat you to a serving.” “I don’t even know what it’s made of.” Frank inspected the fridge and closed the door. “Me neither. And I don’t care if I never do.” “Me neither."
