DISTANT MEMORIES


After completing the round of the day,
When sun sets in the golden westward sea;
When earthen lamps fight the dark of the night,
Competing with the glow-worms’ dancing spree;

When stars compete for the rays of the moon,
Causing them from their path to be scattered;
When larks and cuckoos get tired of the winds,
And from the clouds, towards nests are gathered;

When silent paths echo with past footsteps,
When breeze is tired of blowing constantly;
When ballads of yore enliven the past,
As bonfires light up the evening chilly;

It’s then that distant memories come near,
And smoke assumes a shape that’s familiar.


* A 14-line poem in pentameter, with three abcb quatrains and a rhyming couplet.

तुम्हारा चिन्तन

संध्या के ढलते हुए दिवाकर की किरणें
जब लहरों पर सोने के दीप जलाती हैं
तुलसी चौरे के संझवाती के दीपक की
बाती जब रजनी की चूनर छू जाती है

जब टिम्टिम करते हुये जुगनुओं का मेला
लगने लगता है नदिया तट के कुंजों में
जब दिशा भटक कर खो जाती है चन्द्र किरण
नभ की गलियों में बिखरे तारक पुंजों में

जब थके हुए पाखी नीड़ों के आमंत्रण
को अपने आप सजा लेते हैं बाँहों में
जब देहरी होकर पग के चुम्बन को आतुर
चौखट को छोड़ चली आती है राहों में

जब पीपल की शाखों को नर्म बिछौना कर
पुरबाई के झोंके जम्हाई लेते हैं
जब चौपालों के आलावों को लोककथा
के शब्द और नूतन तरुणाई देते हैं

उस घड़ी अचानक मन की गहरी वादी में
सुधियों की कोई एक कली खिल जाती है
आकॄतियों में तब भरने लगता रंग नया
और सुपरिचित छवि फिर फिर बन जाती है.
