Dan and Sally live on a farm. They like to wave at men on tractors.

Dan and Sally have chores to do. They have to beat the cow with a stick.

Their family is poor. They only have one old green chair and grandma is always sitting in it.

Sally has thick ankles like her Mom.

Dan knows that corn shucks are handy when you don't have any toilet paper.

In the evening Dan and Sally play checkers while their father begs his drug dealer for more drugs.

But the drug store is crowded tonight and the old man can't get through. He wonders if he should just kill himself and be done with all the misery.

Dan and Sally like to read the story about Freddy the Farting Hog.

They laugh at the part where the city boy gets blown off his feet by one of Freddy's gigantic hog farts.

But mostly Dan and Sally feel sad. They spend a lot of time writing letters to strangers, trying to get themselves adopted into a better family. But it's hopeless. They aren't going anywhere.
