![]() It was a lovely morning on the beach. We walked along the tide line looking for shells and treasures. Matt found a gull feather and held it up. “Look! A dolphin feather!” Amy said, “Is not! There’s no such thing. Dolphins don’t have feathers.” “Do too!” He put the feather in his plastic bag. “Mommy, tell him it’s not a dolphin feather,” Amy said. “He’s having fun pretending it is.” I told her. Amy shrugged. We walked down nearer the sea, and saw some children were making a sand castle for the next tide to demolish. Matt and Amy went over to help. I unfolded my sand chair and sat looking at the sea and dreaming. The water was clear blue this morning the surf was calm. Only yesterday it had been gray and angry. Watching the children play I reached into my bag for my book and discovered I had picked up the wrong one. This wasn’t my paperback mystery; it was the local phone directory from the hotel room. Oh well, I thought. I can’t waste a day like this one. I went over to help with the sand castle. This castle will be splendid, and great will be the fall of it when the tide comes in. Today I can be a kid again for a little while. I can believe in dolphin feathers. At least until the next tide washes it all away. 239 words Won 7/3/08
