There once lived a lonely girl with special powers, and like anyone afflicted by such things, she was terribly misunderstood.
Mildred - we'll call our unlikely hero - had one super gift that made others wary. See, this unique heroine could tell from people's thoughts precisely what they meant. For instance, let's say you were extremely cold, yet rather said, "I'm cool." Millie would know your statement's true meaning. It seems obvious, abilities relating to mind-reading - which hers bordered upon - might be heralded. Wrong. Humans feared secrets revealed, so my protagonist did not flourish. Instead, gifted Mil worked in customer service.
