AN EMPTY WOMAN

AN EMPTY WOMAN

As a young vivacious girl,
Light of step, light of heart,
Each morning verily a
New life for me did start.

Life then always seemed so full,
Chasing the butterflies.
Pups and cats and frogs all had
For me a big surprise.

As I grew, young boys came in
To fill further my life.
One of them made an offer
And I became his wife.

Life then always seemed so full
Of chores and joys and woes.
I had no time to perceive
How age on oneself grows.

Kids became adults and left
To build nests of their own.
My husband and I were left
About them to bemoan.

Life even then was so full,
Heeding each other’s needs,
Trying to spot roses in
The old memories’ weeds.

But now I am all alone,
Gone is also my man.
Empty house, an empty mind,
I’m an empty woman!
