This class is perfect for the serious student who is interested in learning the foundations upon which a positive, critical review is built. As reviewers, we cement our own understanding of the components of storytelling through reading and commenting on other authors’ works. An author who receives a thoughtful, in-depth review which points out where the writing is strong and where there is room for improvement will be compelled to hone his/her craft through this encouraging and supportive medium. When a review is well-balanced and informed, everybody wins! In the course of this term, we will learn to focus our reviews with organization and intention by covering some of the most critical aspects of storytelling, including: plot, conflict, characters, setting/imagery, and grammar/punctuation; and we will explore reviewing across different genres, including: short stories, poetry, essays and articles. There is a lot to learn, and each lesson will build upon the ones before it. Get ready, because it’s going to be a wild and rewarding ride! This SIX WEEK class starts September 18, 2009. Class Rules We have six lessons in a six week course. Each week, another lesson will be made available. This course was originally an eight week-long class, so students interested in the last two lessons may have them. (See syllabus below.) No one fails. We will give you everything you need to ensure that you learn the material and can apply what you have learned to your writing. We will never turn away a student in need. If you need anything, contact me, Nicki D89 The grading scale is simple, Assignments count as 75% of your grade. Participation in the Discussion Topic and interacting with fellow classmates count as 25%. This means if you complete an assignment and get everything correct but do not participate in the discussions you could only get a 75 = C. The Discussion Topic is 25% of your grade and is broken down into two grading opportunities. Answering the Discussion Topic is 15% of the original 25%. Actively responding to your classmates' posts and/or becoming involved with ongoing, lesson related discussions makes up 10% of the original 25%. This means if you finish the assignment completely, (with no errors), answer the Discussion Topic, but do not become actively involved with the discussion (at least one post to a classmate that makes a point. "Good Job" or "Well Done!" does not count.), you could only receive a 90 = A- The grading scale: 95 - 100 = A 90 - 94 = A- 85 - 89 = B 80 - 84 = B- 75 - 79 = C 70 - 74 = C- 65 - 69 = D 60 - 64 = D- No one will score below a 60. We will see to it. All grades are kept confidential. Students will be emailed their individual grades. You will find the full explanation of how I would like you to "hand in" your assignments in the "Love Reviews Assignment Forum" Class Outine Lessons One through Six are MANDATORY for completion of this class.
