To run the spiritual path with endurance, we do need to grasp ourselves.
This is an oft neglected part of the spiritual process, but it is crucial. After all, "knowing ourselves is the very foundation for understanding who we are, what we do .. and how to change." The scriptures themselves recurrently encourage us to examine ourselves. Since we are beings "made in God's image" we should therefore delight in expressing our identity, since, in its truest form, it emanantes from Him. But, in order to do this truthfully and clearly ... we need to become self-aware. After all, how can we bring ourselves closer to God ... if we do not truly understand the selves we are transporting? That is the starting line, the beginning, the point of escalation. We must first know, and then change, ourselves before we can effect the world, before we can truly help others come to a knowledge of Him. We must also understand our environment, its properties and how to navigate it. (This is where values and principles come in.) Finally, we must know God as an individual ... as the Owner of our lifeforce, into whose hands we place it as a vessel for His use. "I don't think God cares where we were graduated or what we did for a living. God wants to know who we are. Discovering this is the work of the soul - it is our true life's work." -- Bernie Siegel "The degree that you know yourself defines the degree to which you grow yourself."
