The Grammar Garden The Grammar Garden takes us back to the individual components of a simple, complete sentence. The material focuses in-depth on nouns, pronouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs, conjunctions, prepositions, and interjections. This is a beginning class in grammar only. We do not deal with compound sentences, complex sentences, or compound-complex sentences. The only type of phrase we deal with is the prepositional phrase. Each lesson includes definitions of the components, example sentences, and the practical application of each term listed above. Limit of 10 students. No waiting list available. 7 week course Instructor: Madam Okira From the Ground Up A beginner's poetry class designed for those with little to no poetry education or experience in writing poetry. REGISTRATION CLOSED. So, you want to write poetry? You sit down to the keyboard and pour out your heart in words stacked in lines with a few dashes or a few . . . and a lot of !!! all full of emotion and you label it "POEM." Not so fast. Your first poetic effort may actually turn out really well. Miracles happen every day. Look at it this way: When you want to grow a garden, the first thing you have to do is prepare the ground. Weeds and grass have to be removed. The soil needs to be dug up and compost and fertilizer added. Then, it needs to be cultivated to make the soil nice and loose. All this, and you haven't planted one seed. Oh, and don't forget watering. Compare a poem to the vegetable you want to grow. It will be the result of all your preparation. You don't want it to be stunted and wimpy; you want it something you can be proud of producing. You must take the time to prepare the ground. That's what this course is all about. "From the Ground Up" is a poetry class for beginners who do not have any educational background in writing poetry or much experience and want to get started. By the end of the course, you won't be writing like Robert Frost or Emily Dickinson, but you will be familiar with some of the basic terminology and be able to produce a structurally good poem. This workshop has two phases. In the first, the student writes six vignettes, one per week using the provided learning prompts. In the second phase, the vignettes are used as a basis for extracting a story line and then expanding the story line to include the dramatic ingredients: character sketches and a synopsis of the vignettes that will be included in the larger work. Come to this workshop prepared to work but also to have fun. Limit of 7 students One slot waiting list available for those who sign up after the course is filled. If you do not understand that, you may not be using punctuation to its fullest potential. Besides making your work look polished and grammatically correct, good punctuation shapes and colors your writing—it adds dimension. A good CEO knows how to place employees where they will be the most effective. Learn the specific jobs of each punctuation mark. Put them to work for you to make your writing say what you want it to say and how you want to say it. Carefully choosing which ones to use is the difference between good writing and powerful writing. If you are ready to take charge of punctuation and use it to help you write powerfully as well as grammatically correct, sign up for Punctuation Station. You will learn the proper usage of the period, question mark, exclamation mark, colon, semicolon, quotation marks, apostrophe, parentheses, hyphens, dashes, ellipsis dots and more! This course is exciting and can change the way you view punctuation. Come prepared to work, though. No one said being published would be easy, so if you are not really serious about learning how to effectively manage your team of punctuation marks, then leave the slot open for someone who is. Do you have trouble deciding when to use a comma and when to avoid it? If you question yourself, or if others have remarked on your comma confusion, this is the class for you. Comma Sense is an exciting six-week course focusing on the crazy, squiggly punctuation mark that plagues us all. My lessons pinpoint the most recent rules for comma usage. I provide examples to help you understand each of the 30 comma-placement rules as they apply to specific sentence structures. Elementary rules of grammar are interwoven into each lesson in order for you to grasp the logic of comma application. Submission of weekly writing assignments and exercises are required to test your knowledge of the material presented. All homework is graded within a day or two and privately submitted to each student with an extensive explanation of any errors detected. In most cases, I will require you to revise your exercises and assignments until you get it right. This is how we learn! I have designed the course with an inherited sense of humor in a relaxed atmosphere of lighthearted interchange. Participation in weekly forum discussions is a REQUIRED activity and an important part of each lesson. This is an arduous course involving much work on your part.
