                                          Ghazal 167


Persian:  Dar ahd e baadshah e khatabukhsh, jurmpoosh
              Hafiz qaraabakash shud o mufti piyaalanoosh
Urdu:      Khush ahd e baadshah e khatabukhsh o jurmpoash
              Hafiz qaraabakash hua, mufti piyaalanoash

English:=== In the reign of our king so generous, so kind
                  The sheik and the preacher in the bar we find
                                                    -

Persian:  Sufi zay kunj e soomia dar pa e khum nashist
              Ta deed mohtasib keh saboo meekashad ba doosh
Urdu:      Sufi bhee aa kay baetha hay matkay ki chhaoun maen
              Daekha keh mohtasib bhee phiray hay saboo ba doash

English:=== The censor now carries a bottle of wine
                  And the mystic has also left the shrine
                                                    -

Persian:  Ahwaal e shaikh o qazi o shurb e yahood e shaan
              Kardam sawaal subhey dam az peer e maifaroosh
Urdu:      Surb e nihaan e qazi o mufti ka haal jab
              Poocha jo, mujh say kehnay laga peer e maifaroash

English:=== To the keeper of the bar when I talked about sheik
                  And said that to me he looke rather fake
                                                      -

Persian:  Gufta na guftaniest sukhan gar cheh mehrami
              Darkash zabaan o parda negehdaar o mai banoosh
Urdu:      Mehram hay, razdaan hamaara hay too walay
              Kehnay ki baat yeh naheen, Khamoash baadanoash

English:=== He looked at me and said with a smile
                  That damning such people was not our style
                                                      -

Persian:  Saaqi bahaar meerasad o jaam e mai namaand
              Fikray bakun keh khoon e dil aamad zay gham ba joosh
Urdu:      Saaqi bahaar aaie hay, thorhi sharaab day
              Aata hay soaz e gham say mera khoun e dil ba joash

English:=== So since it was spring and the weather was fine
                  I begged the barmaid to get me some wine
                                                      -

Persian:  Ishq ast o muflisi o jawaani o noobahaar
              Uzram pazeer o jurm ba zael e karam bapoosh
Urdu:      Hay ishq o muflisi o jawaani o fasl e gul
              Ker maazarat qabool, chhupa jurm aebpoash

English:=== Telling her that being so poor, so meek
                  Because I'm a lover, indulgence I seek
                                                      -

Persian:  Aey baadshah e soorat o maani keh misl e to
              Naadeeda heetch deeda o nashneed heetch goosh
Urdu:      Aey baadshah e soorat e seerat, tera maseel
              Daekha na aankh say, na kisi nay suna ba goash

English:=== Our king is so brave, so noble, so kind
                  That a ruler like him is difficult to find
                                                      -

Persian:  Chundaan bamaan keh khirqa e azraq kunad qabool
              Bakht e jawaanat az falak e peer e zindapoosh
Urdu:      Lambi ho umr itni keh day bakht ko teray
              Ik khirqa azraqi falak e peer e zindapoash

English:=== Him, for his wisdom, we all applaud
                  And he also enjoys the favor of God
                                                      -

Persian:  Ta chand hamchu shamay zabaan aawari kuni
              Parwaana e muraad raseed aey moohib khamoosh
Urdu;      Kab tak zabaan daraazi karay ga khayaal e sham
              Parwaana e muraad mila hay, too reh khamoash   

English:=== I thank my Maker again and again
                  I am so lucky, I cannot complain
                                                      -

Persian:  Deeshab nida zay ghaeb ba goosh e dilam raseed
              HAFIZ,to ghussa kum khor o banshheen o mai banoosh 
Urdu:      HAFIZ pio sharaab, gham o ghusa kum karo
              Aati hay shab maen ghaib say yeh ik nida ba goash     

English:=== And last night,HAFIZ, I heard a voice
                  Which said I should drink, and dance, and rejoice
