Reacting on the Bank
Once out of sorts, getting back into the flow isn’t easy. From Bottle in the River.

Reacting on the Bank

What can I do to provide that space,
other than to take a deep breath?

When I smile space enters
into the place, and I
enter my warrior world—
where I wield the sword
of the present, slicing
right into this single moment,
and splitting away the past from the future—
elbowing enough space in time, for me—

I just sit here,
with all the right things,
and nothing, nothing, nothing—

I just sit here,
up on the bank, holding
all the right things,
and let go of the right things—

I just sit here,
up on the bank, savoring
the arms of the poet, savoring
the love of the moment, savoring
the authenticity of this feeling,

be it good or bad.

Doesn’t much matter,
for up here on the bank,
the river just
flows past.
