"The Beggar in a Wheelchair."

I am the wheelchair
in the emergency room
with the beggar there
to tell me who he is -

"My name’s Jack
frozen in this winter
trying to find a friend
to help me where I am,

lost in a snow storm
in the cold dark night
where the wolves prowl
searching for my scraps,

begged for in the streets
no shoes or gloves on
now sitting in this chair
paralyzed and frozen afraid."

Weeping, I hold him near
to cover him with my rug
that he may be warm
with my arms around him,

to sing a lullaby there
with my wheels crying
a faint ringing sound
for him to fall asleep,

as I wheel him into theatre
where he waves a hello
knowing I will pray for him
to be with me tomorrow,

that he may ride
to the old age home
there were others lie
waiting for a wheelchair.
