Entering the Summer of my Life
I have reached the age of thirty-three, The time has now come for me, To reflect on my life's journey thus far, To examine my womenhood, maybe change my car. I started the night in an optician's chair, No deterioration in vision, no need for despair, I met with a friend of a similar age, And realised how different we were at this stage. Her news of attainment of lover and partner, Who fled from a marriage of impending disaster, My news of contacting an ex-boyfriend of 10 years, Reduced her to laughter and brought me close to tears. I lay on my bed later that night, Uncomfortably pondering what end was in sight, My mind turned to letters, builders and banks, Then switched over to dreams full of hope and thanks. I dreamed up a future of love and adventure, Of romance and children and lack of debenture, A place where my spirit runs wild and free, Unstagnated by the pressures of society. I woke up all refreshed with the wisdom of age, I renegotiated my mortgage and turned a new page, And as for the recently contacted ex, I remembered the good times and looked forward to sex. The End
