Four Seasons Pizza: An Acrostic on Food and Marriage
First week of our marriage,
on our honeymoon in Rome, we dined
under a chilly December moon, in the shadow of the Vatican. Do you
remember the pizza called the Four
Seasons? We drizzled it with olive oil;
each quarter, different toppings, different seasons.
artichokes and cooked ham in one corner,
slices of tomato and mushroom on the second,
olives on a third. Lumps of mozzerella barely melted on each quarter,
no tomato sauce at all, the crust thin and crispy.
Slices of prosciutto draped the fourth quarter. It was a
pizza unlike any we'd tasted in America.
In Italy, we learned to appreciate their
zest for life. The seasons of two lives, divided, like the pizza.
Zones for each decade of our lives together, joined in one single creation;
a lesson in food and marriage, and in life. Thank you, our beloved Italy.
