MIDNIGHT SCREAMS She lays in bed there in the dark. The door is locked, the windows shut. The only light is of the moon, And of the stars that hang above. There's not a soul in the home, It's only her and teddy there. Who knows what lurks down below, Three stories down in the lair. The silence, deafening, surrounds As Lilly hides under the covers. Her sleep has faded as she listens To midnight screams that drag the hours. With teddy wrapped around her tight, She tries to talk herself to sleep, Yet feels no comfort in the room. Her thoughts, disturbing, start to creep. She shakes with shivers on her flesh, And prays for night to hide away. She dreads the dark and yearns for light, To rescue her from ghostly rays. At last her eyes with blind vision, They drift her to the land of dreams. And she no longer weeps in silence, Attuned to endless midnight screams. October 6, 2008
