Spellbound

Fall is coming. The days are still warm, but if you concentrate you can smell the hint of decay and moisture that comes with the cooler weather. Already the nights carry a chill. If you go out in the early morning just before dawn, you can almost see your breath in the air.

It was very cool this morning as I sat on the stone bench by the pond. Everything was hushed, as if the whole world was waiting for something to happen. The sun inched its way higher in the sky and all the sleepy creatures began to wake. Birds herald the new day with soft, drowsy chirps from the tops of trees. Fat bullfrogs and shy turtles climb out on rocks to bask in the warming rays of the sun. Butterflies and dragonflies fly over the water, casting colorful reflections.

I sit and drink it in, this moment in time. Wishing that I could freeze it for all eternity, save it for days when life seems too harsh, too sharp, with edges that tear the soul. But for right now, I am at peace. The wind picks up and carries a leaf to me from the tree next door. I watch spellbound as it twirls, a ballet dance of nature, before it gently settles at my feet. I pick it up, feeling the rough texture between my fingers.

The sky is a pale robins egg blue, another signal that the seasons are changing. I watch the clean white clouds race each other high above me. My mind is at peace and I am humbled by the beauty that surrounds me. Fall is coming...for all of us.
