Deceptive Dreams
An ongoing experience of nightmares

The nightmares arrive at night,
portending a lonely life;
one in which you are not here,
days that are filled up with fear.
When nightly visions call my name,
they come my crying soul to claim.

I awake at morning light,
striving with all my might
to thrust the thoughts from my mind
and their tentacles untwine.
Despite knowing it was a dream,
my heart is filled with silent screams.

While the torment still hovers,
a drape of darkness covers
the light that might grant reprieve
and lift the lies that deceive.
With time, the terror fades away.
and I can move on through my day.

Although my thoughts are now right,
I still know it is my plight
for the dreams to come again
and once more I will descend
into the grip of the abyss
where I will know the devil’s kiss.
