"Thankful For You"
A tribute to my mother, who I love dearly.

There in the light's bell
hiding behind the door
a noise up the stairs
staggers drunkenly,
his hands hurting me
fondling as I scream;
Mom please help me!

My mother pleading
with my stepfather
standing in the door,
the creep cursing
to beat her bleeding
lying on the floor
trying to shield me,

falling down the stairs
flying away scared
to see her weeping,
calling hysterically
to the new neighbors!
"Please call the Sheriff
to lock the creep away?"

Mom and I live alone
her memory fading
away to quiet reverie,
as she holds my hand
her lips whispering
for me to remember
how she saved me,

with arms trembling
never to marry a man
and bare a daughter,
that may hear a creep
staggering up the stairs
to scare and abuse
her child from a memory.
