                                       Dust settled on mahogany,
                                       seeing the haze it was wiped clean.
                                       A visitor sat down a mug
                                       that left a ring on the rich wood;
                                       the wet broke through the dark finish.
                                       A finisher did the restore
                                       and the table looked as before
                                       adding richness to the décor.

                                       Carving upon a dinner plate
                                       the blade slipped and took out a chip
                                       of wood from the shiny surface.
                                       The finisher repaired the space
                                       but looking close there was a trace --

                                       The next day the cat misbehaved
                                       and jumped upon the tabletop;
                                       curious about the nice bowl
                                       she saw resting in the center.
                                       Shooed away her back paws engraved
                                       ridges into the cared for spot.
                                       The finisher, this time, forgot
                                       awaiting more damage or not.

                                       A child wrote on a single sheet
                                       pressing hard the table was marred.
                                       A cigarette in an ashtray
                                       was left unattended to burn
                                       and fell leaving a tar filled mar;
                                       the mar a scar that time would wear.
                                       Cranberry juice found the white chair
                                       staining the cushion sitting there.

                                       The finisher came to the house,
                                       upholstery and surface done
                                       looking like new reflecting sun.

                                       The owner knew it wasn’t true
                                       not like before … it wouldn’t do.

                                       Dust settled upon a table,
                                       mahogany buried undone --
                                       looking dull sitting in the sun.
