The malevolent, starving gator cruelly eyeing its human prey,
With a ferocious snap of its sharp, lengthy jaws, lurking –
The horrified person in the murky, brown water struggles
Toward land, frightened arms and legs kicking feverishly
To propel him to safety.
A life, changed in an instant to an all-or-nothing battle
For merciful survival.
The aquatic superiority of the jungle specimen
Completely evident as it gains on the unlucky traveler
In the man’s gloomy despair, as he races toward the shore,
Abandoning packs and weapons to increase life-saving mobility
And save valuable seconds.
What had been coming so easily for our weary traveler,
The altruistic, commonplace, magnificent reward,
Now looms like a deer caught in the headlights
Of an onrushing automobile,
Potentially vanquished from the saintly, natural,
Wholesome goodness of the planet forever.
The water remains wide and contains much evil,
And is where mistrust is truly warranted…
