Men of God
A poem that I intended to turn into a song, maybe I still will.

Inspired by actual events recorded in Acts 1:9-11
"And when he had spoken these things, while they beheld, he was taken up; and a cloud recieved him out of their sight. And while they looked steadfastly toward heaven as he went up, behold, two men stood by them in white apparel; which also said, Ye men of Galilee, why stand ye gazing up into heaven? This same Jesus, which is taken up from you into heaven, shall so come in like manner, as ye have seen him go into heaven."

They watched him go up,
Their Savior,
Their teacher,
Their Friend.
The clouds passed before Him.
Christ was in heaven again.
They stood for a while,
Watching to see His return.
Two men to the side caught their eyes.
“Men of God, why stand you here gazing?
Don’t you know there’s work to be done?
This same Jesus who went up before you,
Through you will finish the work He’s begun.”

They sit in the pew,
Hearing the words of the Lord.
“Time’s drawing short.”
They listen but don’t really hear.
“We’ve plenty of time,”
When the end is right at their door.
“I know where I’m going, that’s really what matters.”
Men of God, why sit we here gazing?
Don’t we know there’s work to be done?
This same Jesus who went up so long ago,
Comes soon to finish the work He’s begun.
