REFRESHING EXTRACTED THE SHAME

Middle-age found me pining
         over what might have been,
the mantra of living in vain.

At fifty, embracing what is ---
         life anew foreshadowed by pain.

Dreams of comfort erased me,
         mere existence reshaped me...

With pride and self-loathing displaced,
         refreshing extracted the shame.
