![]() Jasmine loved ice skating. She had dreams of being a figure skater and going to the Olympics and winning the gold, like her idol, Tara Lipinsky. There were problems, though. For one thing, she knew she was not that good at it, and her parents were not about to spend all that money on lessons. She was wearing her older sister’s outgrown skates because her mother could see no reason to buy new ones when there was a perfectly good pair in the house already. When she complained that the boots were a little too big, her Mom said, “Wear more socks.” So she put on another pair of socks but the boots were still not right. Also her sister was not careful with her things and the once-white boots were scuffed and dirty after lying in the back of the closet for a couple of years. Still, once she was on the lake. gliding along, her imagination kicked in. She could hear the music and the crowd and her old jeans and jacket turned into a cute little costume with a miniscule skirt. The crowd cheered as she did her tricks. In the front row was Tara, cheering her on. It was time for her finale, the triple axel she was famous for. She built up speed, turned and propelled herself into the air. Her fantasy crashed back to reality as her body hit the ice full force, knocking the wind out of her. She picked herself up, hurting all over. Her cute costume was now jeans and jacket again and there was no music and no crowd. Tara was nowhere to be seen. Jasmine sat on the log to change her shoes. She picked up her sister’s old skates and began the trudge home. 295 words
