After All This Time
Will we have the courage to try again?

After All This Time

Will it be worth another try?
We’ve failed so many times.
It’s not that we haven’t cared.
In a way we cared too much.

We tried to do the impossible.
We did what we thought was right.
Each time we learned a different way
we inevitably tried that, too.

So, now that we know the name of it,
(Attachment Disorder sounds so simple.)
do we have the strength to try again?
We have a therapist to help us now.
Will that be enough for success?

We still have a hard journey ahead.
There’s no doubt about that.
So, will we try once more
to give it all we have to offer?

Is what we have to give enough now,
after all these years of failure?
After all the disappointment,
can we still find the faith to believe?

This is a poem dedicated to my son, a victim of severe neglect and abuse, causing him to have Attachment Disorder. This is a horrific disorder which must receive the proper therapy by one who is trained in Attachment Disorder. It requires special therapy at home as well. There is great hope for my son, now that we have found a wonderful therapist, Dr. Susan B. Corbin. She has helped him help himself, and has taught us how to parent a child with Attachment Disorder. We are grateful to her every day of our lives.
