CHILDREN PLAYING IN THE RAIN

Happy children playing in the rain
On a summer day,
Raising voices in sweet refrain.
What are they doing in the rain?
Get them out without delay!

As the rain kept falling,
I steadily kept calling.
Their voices were urging others
To come out to play.
On this wet, and windy day?

Don’t their parents know the pun?
“When lightning is in – Out goes the fun."
I call excitedly in commander’s tone:
“You kids, get OUT of this terrible storm!”
I can see no children there
Are not they children that I hear?
What is going on?

All children do depend
On someone’s call to come in.
I panic and began to shout:
“Lightning! Hail! Rain! Get Out!”
There, however, is no answer, my friend,
The happy voices are the Mighty Wind!

Author's Comments
"About 5:00 p.m. on a Sunday afternoon, I heard the laughter of children. I looked out to see the darkest cloud and biggest rain about to fall. Then lightning began at furious pace. Hail began to beat on the screened room and against my windows. Yet, the sound of laughter grew louder and louder. It was strange; but delightful. I was so alarmed at parents for allowing children to play in such a storm. I ran to the door and discovered that as the wind rounded the corner of my house, it sound like the laughter of children playing in water. Thus, this poem was born.
