THE DEATH OF A DREAM

Awakening, even though night stretches out before me.
I struggle to return to my dream-state, enveloped in mist.
The memories of bits and pieces of what could have been
haunt the shadows, yet there is something I can not resist.

We are our memories, lost somewhere in time and space.
A fleeting feeling of comfort and warmth, without any fear.
You were my world, the reason I smiled and tried harder
to keep you and our children close, our pathways clear.

It is inconceivable that time has taken such a toll on us,
a family now in turmoil and near disaster, it would seem.
Sleep eludes me and I find my solace in a glass of wine,
I am alone once more, to celebrate the death of a dream.

Here is a toast to what might have been! A toast to life itself!
There is no turning back or hanging on to what was then.
The rushing sound of waves call me to the edge of madness.
Sad dreams of death for me would not be such a bitter end.
