I joined this Native American Writing Class because I hope to get in touch with my Cherokee roots. Cissy, our instructor knows the language and is giving three words with each course. It would be nice to learn the Cherokee language or at least some of it. The assignments may require research and I would love to learn and write about other tribes.I have a thing for the past: the medieval times and when I think of the old west, the Native Americans always stand out and I am curious about them.I always got upset when the white men shot the Native Americans in the western movies. I am 1/8 Cherokee. My Cherokee family lived in Kentucky and my great grandmother was a full blooded Cherokee and her name was Lightfoot. I read that Cherokee women were ahead of their families. I have three aunts that bossed their husbands around and I can believe that Cherokee women were ahead of their families. At least these women were. I am spoiled and I get what I want from my husband even though I always try to be good to him and do right by him. When I get mad at times, my husband says I am on the war path. It must be the Cherokee in me. I love wolves and being part Cherokee, I feel a connection to them. I love Native Americans and they were the first true settlers in America.

I know Cherokee people lived in the Smoky Mountains in Tennessee. I would like to think that my ancestors lived there and moved to Kentucky later. Maybe black bears helped them find plenty of fish to eat and maybe the black bears were their protectors as well as their friends. Maybe a fifteen year old Cherokee woman encountered some white men and the black bears scared them off. Young Cherokee people in love may have went to the top of the mountains to ask for guidance from the spirits as well as spend time with each other. Maybe my Cherokee great grandmother and her husband moved to Kentucky because she married a white man and her family wasn't pleased with her decision. I don't have much information about my Cherokee family and so as a writer, I am drawing my own conclusions. I would like to think that Great Grandmother Lightfoot was happy. Maybe she had a good marriage with her husband and didn't have to keep him in line. I was told that she smoked a pipe. Maybe she used it as a Peace pipe. If only we had a door to go back and forth into the past. There wouldn't have been a "Trail Of Tears." History would have been different if we could have gone back to the past. If I could go back to the past, Custer wouldn't have liked what I had to say. Maybe I could have charmed him into being nice. I hope everyone has fun with this Native American Writing Class and I hope we learn all we can about other tribes. All of us in this class are Native American at heart.
