There We Were …
There we were, just Jukie and me, Singing and playing beneath the old tree. Princesses, fairies and games of pretend, We giggled and laughed until the day’s end. We’d meet there, first thing every day. Thinking up all kinds of games we could play. We never wanted to watch the TV, We loved the outdoors, just Jukie and me. Seasons changed and years tumbled by Faster, it seemed, than the blink of an eye. Just now and then, we would stop by the tree To whisper and talk, just Jukie and me. We grew up from childhood to teens; Traded our jump ropes for skin-tight blue jeans. Homework and boyfriends and staying out late, Our lives grew apart and time didn’t wait. Marriage, kids, a house and a car Who knew our lives would have drifted so far? Sometimes I thought, when a moment was free, “Whatever happened to Jukie and me?” Years later, I see her again; I hadn’t seen her since I don’t know when. She looks at me and I’m looking at her And within our hearts, I knew … there we were. Meter: 8-10-10-10 Rhyme: aabb
