Q1. I am more comfortable following the pyramid. I am very organized in my daily life. Step a, leads to step b, to step c and so on. I make my muse follow the same directions. When I write down just ideas, I label them like the pyramid to give my work some sense of direction. I have drifted away from it a few times, just depending on whether I want the story to be climatic from the start, but that is very rare.

Q2. Yes, that is called medias res.

Q3. In my reading, I like a mix. I subscribe to a book service and almost every book (romances) follow the pyramid. You get the background on the characters, followed by the building tension, then the conflict between the lovers, the fix-up and then the end. After completing this assignment, as I read one of these books, I am already thinking to myself, ok, where is the conflict, who is going to apologize first and so on. Some book genres just follow it all the time. Others, like horrors or mysteries can begin under total distress, and I like that just as much.
